Manasa was started by Dr. H.S. Subrahmanyam, MBBS, DPM, FRCP(Lon), FRCP(Edin), FRCPsych and Kasturi Subrahmanyam, MA, MPhil, in 1964.
They met in NIMHANS, Bangalore, when he was doing his DPM, and she her Mphil in Psychology. He went on to train in the UK with achieving a rare triple MRCP, membership of three Royal Colleges of Edinburgh, Glasgow and London, with expertise in medicine, neurology and psychiatry . They married on his return and set up a small practice in their home in Double Road.Their practice rapidly grew. Dr Subrahmanyam was a sought after clinician and teacher in the major hospitals of Bangalore, including first Bowring and then St Martha’s Hospital. He set up the department of psychiatry At St John’s hospital, Bangalore, and was Professor and head of the department until his retirement. They realised that patients with mental illnesses were discriminated against in general hospitals, particularly those who required inpatient careen They took the brave and then unprecedented step of building a large, state of the art, hospital dedicated exclusively to mental health. And that’s when Manasa moved to its present site.
After Dr Subrahmanyam’s death in 2004, and Kasturi Subrahmanyam’s retirement from clinical services (she remains an active director), Manasa now comprises a team of internationally trained consultant psychiatrists, neuropsychiatrist, psychologists, physicians, psychiatric nurses, supported by laboratory, administrative and domestic staff.
The hospital today hosts a busy outpatient department, with psychiatry, neuropsychiatry and psychology services, as well as allied specialist medical input where needed.
Manasa has always been known for its ability to help those with severe mental illnesses requiring intensive inpatient psychiatric care, even those with serious comorbid medical illnesses.
