After graduating from Bangalore Medical college (BMCRI) in 1987, Dr MS Dharmendra completed his postgraduate Diploma from NIMHANS in 1989. Subsequently, he worked as a Junior Psychiatrist under Dr HS Subrahmanyam, an eminent psychiatrist, at Manasa Neuropsychiatric Hospital for a year. He pursued further postgraduate training in psychiatry at Command Hospital Air Force, Bangalore from 1990 to 1992.
He was selected to undergo further training in psychiatry by the Royal College of Psychiatrists, UK in 1992, following recommendations from his mentor, Dr HS Subrahmanyam and his professors at NIMHANS.
He completed his specialist training in psychiatry at Portsmouth and Southampton Hospitals, England from August 1992 to May 1996 and obtained a membership to the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) in January 1996. Between May 1996 and August 1999, he pursued specialist training at Aberdeen, Scotland in General Adult Psychiatry and its allied specialities. He also furthered his special interest in addiction psychiatry (alcohol and substance misuse) and forensic psychiatry. In June 1999, he received the certificate of completion of specialist training (CCST) from the General Medical Council, UK. He worked as a Consultant in General Adult Psychiatry to Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS trust until 2005, when he returned to India.
Since his return, he has been associated with Manasa Neuropsychiatric Hospital as a Senior Consultant Psychiatrist. He has amassed vast experience through his association with Manasa and by consulting continuously for the last nearly 20 years.
He has published in reputed journals such as Journal of Affective Disorders and British Journal of Psychiatry and remains engaged in continuing medical education.
Dr Dharmendra is passionate about furthering the cause of mental health in India, particularly reducing the stigma associated with it.
